Sex Temple in Khajuraho - India Trip
Khajuraho is a small town, not many people, and it is the cleanest place we experienced in India. What famous here is the sex temple, which can be divided into 3 groups, the western group of temples (11 temples), the eastern group of temples (3 temples), and the southern temple (1 temple). Khajuraho group of temples are probably the sexiest temples in the world because of the erotic sculptures.
The flight from Agra to Khajuraho is less than 1 hour. We arrived Khajuraho around 3pm, which left us enough time to visit the eastern and southern temples before the day got dark. A local guide and a driver picked us up from the airport. After half an hour stop at the hotel, we went to visit the eastern temples. One the way, the young guide did all the talking, while the driver remained quite. From our conversation, I learned that the guide is a very modern guy: he doesn’t want to get married because he doesn’t want to lose his freedom, and he has traveled many places around the world, which really surprised me since I didn’t expect him to be able to afford these kind of long distance trips!
The eastern temples have 3 small Jain temples, and the figures here are still in the “dating stage”:
After spent about 45 minutes or so in the eastern group of temples, the driver drove us to the southern temple, which is a single Hindu temple. Quote from Wikipedia: “The Khajuraho group of temples were built together but were dedicated to two religions, Hinduism and Jainism, suggesting a tradition of acceptance and respect for diverse religious views among Hindus and Jains in the region.” This is the beauty of India, a lot of tolerance, and a lot of freedom. The same reason why I love Canada.
The figures at the southern temple are still “single”:
Before we left the southern temple, we met 2 retired women from Beijing. They were travelling alone without a strict plan. They told us that they hadn’t figure out where to live for tonight yet, and they seemed not worried about it at all… We left the temple with the van provided by the travel agency, and they left the temple walking with hiking poles… Even though I admired them being brave, but I could never understand how people can travel without a detailed plan…
The driver drove us to a restaurant besides the western temple for dinner (above photo is western temples at the sunset). The guide said the owner of the restaurant was a couple from Switzerland. Since they are old now, their son is running the business. We thought we would see a tall, rich, handsome, young caucasian owner at the restaurant, but all we saw were a dozen of Indian waiters… We had dinner on the roof patio of the restaurant, which has a good view of the western group of temples. I thought the food would be expensive due to the nice view. However, 2 bowl of goat meat, and a basket of butter naan only cost my mom and me 756 INR (12 US) together.
One the way back to hotel, an Indian young couple who passed by our car caught our attention. The lady was wearing a red sari which made her very captivate. The guide told us that India couples come to Khajuraho for honeymoon: in the day time, they come to the temple to learn the love positions; at night, they practice at hotels. I asked the guide if he was kidding, but he said no in a serious way… In the evening, Water and Wing went out to see the Kandariya Folk Dance Show, and my mom and I stayed at hotel resting. The next day Water told my mom and me that the dance show was so boring that she fell asleep during the show.
The western groups of temples have 11 temples in total, the entrance fee is 500 INR per person, camera and cell phones are free. There is a UNESCO World Heritage sign inside the western temples site. Compare to the eastern and southern temples, the western temples are the best temples in Khajuraho. In order to have a look of all the 11 temples, you will need 3 hours here.
Some of the temples here are big, and some of the temples are small, but all of them have complicated sculptures/patterns on the outside.
If you want to visit the inside of the temples, please remove your shoes before you get up the stairs.
In the southern temple, “people” are still single. In the eastern temples, “people” started dating. In the western temples, they are finally making out.
Animals are also part of the game.
I found the elephant was a fast learner and very skilled.
Sometimes things can go beyond your imagination and tolerance...
Let us just wash our eyes by looking at the amazing building structures of the western group of temples.
Our guide said the erotic sculptures are certain type of yoga practice. I guess people need to keep their body flexible to be able to play the yoga game. ☺ Both my mom and my husband said my dress color was too close to the temple’s wall color. My mom suggested a green dress might look better and I definitely agreed with her.
